What Is Question 2 Asking?
You’ll get a question like:
“Use details from both sources. Write a summary of the differences in [topic].”
OR
“Write a summary of the similarities between…”
You need to:
- Compare the content or attitudes of both texts

- Avoid analysing language (that’s Question 3!)
- Be concise, accurate, and comparative
It’s a reading and inference question — not a language analysis question.

- How are those experiences different or similar?

How to Structure Your Answer

Point 1: Identify a clear difference (or similarity)
Source A says/shows that…
Whereas, Source B says/shows that…
Point 2: Back it up
Use short quotes or paraphrase to support each side of the comparison.
Point 3: Do this at least twice
You need 2–3 clear comparative points for a full answer.

Question:

In Source A, the writer describes their travel as thrilling and full of energy. They mention “the buzz of Times Square and the rush of yellow taxis”, which creates a sense of excitement.
In contrast, Source B focuses on the discomfort of travelling. The writer describes being “trapped for weeks in cramped quarters with little food and poor air”. This shows the journey was long, unpleasant, and tiring.
While the writer in Source A feels energised and inspired, the writer in Source B feels exhausted and isolated. This shows how travel in the modern day is quicker and more enjoyable than it was in the past.
